Washington impersonator stays true to his character

When most people think of George Washington, they usually picture the president who appears on the dollar bill.

They seldom picture a young man in his prime, a military leader. But it will be this George Washington – a general and commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War – who will walk the grounds of North Augusta’s Living History Park, 299 West Spring Grove Ave., this weekend.

Herkimer Home serves breakfast with Gen. Washington

LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. — On the morning of Aug. 1, 1783, Gen. George Washington visited the home of George Herkimer as part of his visit to the Mohawk Valley region.

The home had belonged to George Herkimer’s brother: Gen. Nicholas Herkimer, who died from injuries sustained from the Battle of Oriskany six years earlier. The breakfast — which occurred 233 years ago — was documented by Count Francesco dal Verme as he traveled with Washington on his northern tour.

This past Independence Day weekend marked a time when people flocked to beaches, parks, and to see fireworks, while others headed to the theaters to see Colchester resident John Koopman, III, star in a prominent film role honoring the country’s history.

“America: Imagine the World Without Her,” was produced by Gerald R. Molen, a producer of “Jurassic Park” and “Minority Report.” The new film looks at the heroes who built America, such as Christopher Columbus, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglas, George Washington and others.
